The importance of Personal Protective Equipment – For the purpose of applying Regulatory Standard No. 6, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is considered to be any device or product for individual use intended to protect against risks that threaten the safety and health of workers in their most different work tasks.

PPE whose use is required by the standard of OSH are those intended for the protection of the head, eyes and face, hearing, respiratory, trunk, upper and lower limbs, the entire body and also for protection against falls in difference of level.

Among the various types of personal protective equipment available on the market for workers in all segments, whether in industry, commerce or services, are professional footwear, glasses, hearing protection, face protection, clothing, helmets, gloves and safety belts. safety.


Every contracting company is obliged to provide free PPE suitable to its employees whenever general measures do not offer complete protection against existing risks; while collective protection measures are being implemented; and for emergency situations.

In turn, it is up to the employees to use their protective equipment only for the purposes for which they are intended; be responsible for the care and conservation of them; communicate to the employer any changes that make them unfit for use so that they can be replaced; and comply with the requirements for proper use.

For a company to be able to know all the PPE that must be provided to its employees, it is necessary to make a study of occupational risks, to identify the dangers within the work environment and to define the collective and individual measures to be taken to reduce them or neutralize them.

It is incumbent upon the Specialized Service in Safety Engineering and Occupational Medicine (SESMT), after hearing the CIPA (Internal Accident Prevention Commission) and the user workers, to recommend to the employer the individual protection equipment appropriate to the risks existing in the respective activities.

In companies that are not required to constitute the SESMT, it is up to the employer to select the PPE appropriate to the risks through the guidance of a technically qualified professional, after consultation with CIPA or, in the absence of this, the designated and user workers.


All individual protection equipment, national or imported, before being sold, must pass a series of tests that guarantee its quality. All PPE, however, has a useful life, which is around five years, depending on its use, its conservation and even how it is stored even though it has never been used.
